Thanks for all playing along :) These are little piles of inoculated lucerne (alfalfa) seed formed as we were cleaning out the seeder. If you look closely at the photo I posted 6 days ago (Sept 14) of the seedling lucerne on the pocketknife blade you can just see the tiny purple seed on the base of the seedling top of photo.
Colour me clueless.
