The elusive native Water-rat.
The Rakali, or Water-rat, is one of
Australia's only two amphibious mammals (the platypus being the other), about
the size of a small possum and is not often seen. I have only observed them before
dawn on cold winter mornings when our water channels are lower. Their shy &
quick nature makes them very hard to spot and even harder to photograph. This
morning I got lucky… of sorts. It’s not the best the photograph but it is one!
Interesting---- But then you guys DO have a lot of interesting critters!
ReplyDeleteI remember seeing a small family of them years ago with my father. And haven't seen any since. Well done for capturing it on camera.
ReplyDeleteIn the medium distance where once lived was a creek and when walking the dogs, we would often see them. The area is so built up now, I wonder if they still co-exist.
ReplyDeleteThis looks like our muskrat. Check it out on google.
ReplyDeleteWell done. I was hooked on the platypus when we were in Australia. I came back with platypus ornaments and toys that take pride of place in our lounge :-) Have a good weekend Diane
