How interesting! I wish something like this to the old cottonwood at the edge of our drive. We think it's dying. I will miss it.
The very top looks like a hand reaching toward the sky... Or maybe I just need more coffee. A fine, dramatic picture which demonstrate what Laura says above...

There are a number of trees around here that are similar. Look like the have died but then sudden new growth. Diane
