We were just burning an old channel to clean it up before a grader comes in to flatten it. Some farmers burn paddocks to get rid of last years stubble. We prefer to keep the stubble to build up the organic matter in the soil.
I hope your fire stayed where it was supposed to. We had one get away from us a couple years ago as we were burning CRP ground. The practice of burning pastures is especially prevalent in the Flint Hills of Kansas in the springtime, where ranchers burn away the old growth to promote the lush green grasses, just like the Native Americans did. Nobody will be burning today! It's too windy.
Yes, we had ploughed control lines so it stayed exactly where we wanted it. Interesting about the burning of old pasture growth in Spring. Those that burn here burn last years stubble in Autumn prior to sowing the new crop.
Is this something farmers in your area do regularly to cut down weeds?

DeleteVery interesting photo and Kim's comment above.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a hot job!
ReplyDeleteYes, you need to pick the right day to do it.
Deletescary! but i'm sure you have lots of hands to keep the burn under control.
ReplyDeleteScary? A little. But with the right preparation, the right weather conditions and an experienced fire fighter at the helm all goes smoothly.
DeleteFascinating when enlarged! The heat waves really add drama to the shot!
ReplyDeleteScary - but very effective when it goes well.
ReplyDeleteI hope it did its job. There is something mesmerising about fire.
ReplyDeleteCool shot. I enjoyed the comments too because they explained more about what was happening from everyone's questions.
